Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Statement on President's State Visit to China

STATE VISIT OF PRESIDENT S R NATHAN TO THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

President S R Nathan is making a State Visit to the People's Republic of China from 12-22 September 2001. The visit is at the invitation of President Jiang Zemin.

President Nathan is accompanied by Mrs Nathan; Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Manpower; Dr Ow Chin Hock, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for National Development; Mr Mohamad Maidin Packer Mohd, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education; Dr Ong Chit Chung, Chairman of Defence and Foreign Affairs Government Parliamentary Committee and Member of Parliament for Bukit Timah GRC, and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

President Nathan is scheduled to visit Beijing, Xi'an, Xiamen, Shanghai, and Suzhou. In Beijing, President Nathan will meet President Jiang Zemin, Vice President Hu Jintao, National People's Congress Chairman Li Peng and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Chairman Li Ruihuan.

President Nathan will also meet with the Singapore communities in Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen.

During President Nathan's absence, Mr Lim Kim San, Chairman of the Council of Presidential Advisers, will be Acting President.
