MFA Press Release: Deputy Prime Minister S Jayakumar's Official Visit to Brazil

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Law S Jayakumar began the first day of his official visit to Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, with visits to the jointly-owned shipyard operations of Maua-Jurong Shipyard in Niteroi and the Singapore-owned shipyard operations of Keppel Offshore & Marine in Angra dos Reis. Accompanying him were Minister of State for Trade & Industry, Heng Chee How and a delegation of more than 20 members, comprising officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Enterprise Singapore, the Singapore Business Federation, and representatives from Singapore-based companies Intraco, Pacific International Lines (PIL), PSA International, SembCorp Marine, ST Electronics and Temasek Holdings.

Together, the two shipyard operations hire almost 10,000 Brazilians, signifying Singapore's long-term commitment in engaging Brazil. The two shipyards mainly handle ship repairs, construction and conversions of Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels for the Brazilian national oil company, Petrobras. To date, SembCorp Marine's Jurong Shipyard (Singapore) and Maua-Jurong along with Keppel Offshore & Marine have projects in Brazil - completed and ongoing - amounting to over US$4.6 billion.
