MFA Press Statement: Appointment of Singapore’s High Commissioner to Australia

The Government has appointed Mr Michael Teo Eng Cheng as Singapore's next High Commissioner to Australia. He will assume post on 5 September 2011.


Mr Teo was Singapore's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from January 2002 to July 2011. He was concurrently accredited to Ireland from June 2002 to July 2011. Prior to his appointment to the United Kingdom, Mr Teo was Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (August 1996 to December 2001) with concurrent accreditation to Mongolia. He was also High Commissioner to New Zealand (February 1994 to July 1996).


Mr Teo obtained his Master of Arts degree from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, Tufts University, USA, in 1993. He received the Public Administration Medal (Gold) (Military) in 1989.


Mr Teo is married to Madam Joyce Ng and they have two children.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY


Mr Michael Teo Eng Cheng was Singapore's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (January 2002 to July 2011) and was concurrently accredited to Ireland (June 2002 to July 2011). He was Ambassador to the Republic of Korea from August 1996 to December 2001 with concurrent accreditation to Mongolia. Prior to this appointment, he was Singapore's High Commissioner to New Zealand from February 1994 to July 1996.


Mr Teo was born in East Malaysia on 19 September 1947. He completed his secondary education in Singapore. He attended the Air War College and graduated from Auburn University, USA, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1984. He obtained his Master of Arts degree from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, Tufts University, USA, in 1993.


Before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Teo joined the RSAF in 1968 as a pilot and rose to become Squadron Commander in 1975 and Commander of the RSAF in 1985. He was re-designated as Chief of Air Force in May 1990 and held the post till August 1992.


During his career in the RSAF, Mr Teo received several honours and awards, among them the Public Administration Medal (Gold) (Military) in 1989.


Mr Teo is married to Madam Joyce Ng and they have two children.
