United States (US) Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, who is making his introductory visit to Singapore in conjunction with the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings, called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana today.
During Secretary Pompeo’s call on Prime Minister Lee, both sides reaffirmed the excellent state of the bilateral relationship. Prime Minister Lee welcomed the US’ continued engagement of ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region. Secretary Pompeo expressed the US’ strong support for Singapore’s Chairmanship of ASEAN, and exchanged views on regional and global developments with Prime Minister Lee.
Secretary Pompeo will also meet Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan tomorrow. At their meeting, Minister Balakrishnan and Secretary Pompeo will sign a Memorandum of Understanding renewing the Singapore-US Third Country Training Programme (TCTP), which provides technical assistance and capacity building to ASEAN Member States and Timor-Leste. Since 2012, the Singapore-US TCTP has trained more than 1,000 officials in 40 courses. It is a concrete example of the close and longstanding cooperation between Singapore and the US, and our joint contribution towards advancing the development agenda of the region.
Secretary Pompeo will depart Singapore tomorrow.
