Visit of Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan to Spain, Italy and the Vatican City, 15 to 19 December 2019

         Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan attended the 14th Asia-Europe Meeting Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (ASEM FMM14) in Madrid on 15 and 16 December 2019.
 
         The ASEM Foreign Ministers emphasised the need to uphold and revitalise multilateralism. Ministers supported continued efforts towards enhancing ASEM partnership on issues including climate change, free trade, economic integration, connectivity and a rules-based international order. Amidst global uncertainty, the Ministers recognised the unique role that ASEM plays as a platform for informal dialogue to foster better understanding between Asia and Europe.
 
         On the sidelines of the ASEM FMM14, Minister Balakrishnan had bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the EU, as well as European and Asian countries. They had wide-ranging discussions over common challenges, regional and international developments, and ways to enhance cooperation.
 
         Minister Balakrishnan continues his visit in Italy and the Vatican City from 17 to 19 December 2019.
