22 January 2020

The Malaysia-Singapore Joint Technical Committee (MSJTC) met on 21 January 2020 in Kuala Lumpur to continue discussions on the implementation of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Judgment on Pedra Branca, Middle Rocks and South Ledge. The Malaysian delegation was led by His Excellency Dato’ Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia and the Singapore delegation was led by His Excellency Mr Chee Wee Kiong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore.

The Meeting continued discussions on related issues arising from the ICJ Judgment on the Case Concerning Sovereignty over Pedra Branca, Middle Rocks and South Ledge. This follows the desire expressed by the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and Singapore at the Ninth Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in Kuala Lumpur on 9 April 2019 for both sides to resolve outstanding bilateral maritime boundary delimitation issues in the area.

The Meeting further agreed for the Sub-Committee on Maritime Boundary Delimitation of Pedra Branca, Middle Rocks and South Ledge to commence negotiations.

The Meeting agreed that the Ninth MSJTC Meeting will be held in Singapore before the next Leaders’ Retreat.
