Appointment of Non-Resident High Commissioner to the Republic of Fiji and Non-Resident Ambassador to the Pacific Islands Forum

The Government has appointed Mrs Mary Seet-Cheng as Singapore’s Non-Resident High Commissioner to the Republic of Fiji and Singapore’s Non-Resident Ambassador to the Pacific Islands Forum.
 
Mrs Seet-Cheng was a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore from 1973 to 1997. She served in Canberra, London and Brussels Missions. As Ambassador in Brussels, she was concurrently accredited to Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, the European Commission, and the Holy See. Mrs Seet-Cheng had also held several senior appointments in the Ministry, covering a wide range of portfolios, including ASEAN, Europe, International Economics, Management and Personnel, North America and Southeast Asia.
 
Mrs Seet-Cheng has served as Senior Specialist Adviser in the Ministry since 2006. In 2007, she was appointed Singapore’s Non-Resident Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba and Republic of Panama.
 
Mrs Seet-Cheng graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) from the University of Singapore in 1973. In 1986, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a Master of Arts in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, Massachusetts. She was awarded the Public Service Star in 2016.

Ambassador Seet-Cheng was a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore (MFA) from 1973 to 1997. She served in the Singapore Missions in Canberra, London and Brussels. From January 1993 to June 1996, as the Ambassador in Brussels, she was concurrently accredited to the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg), the European Commission and the Holy See. She had also held several senior appointments in the Ministry, covering a wide range of portfolios, including Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, ASEAN, and International Economics. She headed the Management and Personnel Directorate from 1990 to 1992.

In November 1997, Ambassador Seet-Cheng was seconded to the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore as Director (Policy). As Director (Policy) until May 2006, she oversaw policy and strategic planning, port industry development and regulation, economic research and international affairs. During this period, she regularly represented Singapore at International Maritime Organisation meetings in London. She continues to serve MPA as Special Adviser.

She returned to MFA on her retirement and was appointed Senior Specialist Adviser (SSA) from 2006 to date. As SSA, she advises MFA on maritime matters. She was appointed concurrently as Singapore’s Ambassador to the Republic of Panama and Cuba, resident in Singapore, from 2007. She ended her assignment as Non-Resident Ambassador to Cuba in November 2019, and will end her assignment as Non-Resident Ambassador to Panama in May 2020.
