A United States Congressional delegation is visiting Singapore from 22 to 24 May 2023. The delegation comprises Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Senator John Boozman (R-Arkansas), Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin), Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), Senator Deb Fischer (R-Nebraska), and Senator John Neely Kennedy (R-Louisiana).
Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies Tharman Shanmugaratnam hosted the delegation to dinner on 22 May. Senior Minister Tharman welcomed the delegation’s commitment to the US’ strong and sustained engagement of the region, including through the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). Both sides also discussed the deep bilateral economic linkages between Singapore and the US, and exchanged views on regional and global developments.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan hosted the delegation to breakfast today. Both sides affirmed the strength of the robust and multifaceted Singapore-US partnership. They discussed how a system of economic integration, free trade, and global supply chains, organised on the principles of competitive advantage, created huge opportunities for people on both sides of the Pacific. They also discussed ways for the US to enhance its economic presence in the region, including through deepening trade and investment cooperation with Southeast Asia. Minister Balakrishnan and the delegation reaffirmed the critical importance of investing in education, skills development, and new infrastructure in the digital age. The delegation is also meeting Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong during their visit.
