Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee Yuan Jiajun called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, was hosted to lunch by Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies Heng Swee Keat, and met Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean today. Secretary Yuan was also hosted to lunch by Minister for Communications and Information and Second Minister for Home Affairs Josephine Teo on 17 July 2023.
Prime Minister Lee welcomed Secretary Yuan to Singapore, and reaffirmed the substantive and multi-faceted relations between Singapore and China. They also discussed the close cooperation between Singapore and Chongqing, anchored by our third Government-to-Government project in China, the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity (CCI). They looked forward to strengthening the collaboration between Singapore and Chongqing, as well as between our two countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Heng and Secretary Yuan welcomed the strong momentum of cooperation between Singapore and Chongqing. They took stock of the good progress in the CCI-New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC), and exchanged views on ways to further collaboration in new areas such as digital connectivity and green development. Secretary Yuan updated Deputy Prime Minister Heng on the developments in Chongqing, and his plans for Chongqing.
Senior Minister Teo and Secretary Yuan reaffirmed the strong and longstanding relations between Singapore and China. Secretary Yuan spoke about his priorities for Chongqing’s development. They also reaffirmed the important role of the CCI-ILSTC in serving as a link between Western China and Southeast Asia, and discussed ways to promote greater regional integration and growth through the development of the CCI-ILSTC.
On 18 July, Minister Josephine Teo and Secretary Yuan delivered speeches at the CCI-ILSTC Regional Cooperation Forum. Both leaders noted the economic potential of Southeast Asia and Western China, and highlighted the CCI-ILSTC’s role in bridging both regions to create new economic opportunities for businesses. Minister Josephine Teo and Secretary Yuan also attended a closed-door discussion where business leaders from both sides exchanged views on Singapore-Chongqing commercial collaborations.
