SINGAPORE’S EXPLANATION OF VOTE BY MS DHIVYA RAJANDRAN, FIRST SECRETARY (POLITICAL AFFAIRS), ON THE RESOLUTION ON “SITUATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE TEMPORARILY OCCUPIED TERRITORIES OF UKRAINE, INCLUDING THE AUTONOMOUS REPUBLIC OF CRIMEA AND THE CITY OF SEVASTOPOL” AT THE 79TH UNGA, THIRD COMMITTEE, UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK 20 NOVEMBER 2024
20 Nov 2024
Mr Chair,
1
As my delegation stated earlier, Singapore takes a principled and consistent approach of abstaining on country-specific human rights resolutions in the Third Committee. This is why we continue to abstain on this resolution on the “Situation of human rights in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol”.
2
Singapore’s abstention on the vote does not reflect our position on the substance of the issues raised in the resolution. We have taken a clear and consistent position that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, annexation of Ukraine’s territories and continued occupation of these territories are clear violations of international law and the UN Charter. Singapore maintains our longstanding position that the sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected and protected.

Thank you, Mr Chair.
