Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Statement on Terrorist Attack in New York and Washington (12 Sep@1445 hrs)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Operations Centre was activated for 24-hour operations at 2130 hrs on 11 Sep 01.

Since then, our Permanent Mission in New York and our Embassy in Washington have been trying to contact all Singaporeans registered with them to ascertain that they and their family members are safe and accounted for. So far, no Singaporean casualties have been reported.

As of 1445 hrs, 278 and 173 Singaporeans have been contacted by our Mission in New York and Embassy in Washington respectively. 295 Singaporeans have contacted the Ministry to register their relatives and friends. This information has been sent to both our missions in the US. Our Mission in New York has also reported that four Singaporeans might have been in the World Trade Centre area yesterday morning. It is still continuing its efforts to contact the four Singaporeans.

Singaporeans in GIC, MAS, OCBC, OUB and UOB offices and other government agencies based in New York and Washington D.C. are safe.
