MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS PRESS STATEMENT
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the Singapore Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and the Singapore Embassy in Washington D.C. continue to assist any Singaporean in need of consular assistance following the tragedy of 11 September 2001 in New York City/Washington D.C.
As of Thursday, 13 September 2001 at 1930 hours, Singaporeans who have registered through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs totalled 408.
There has been a steady decline of Singaporeans contacting the Ministry since the MFA Operations Centre was activated for 24-hour operations following the tragedy which occurred on the night of 11 September 2001 (Singapore time). In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy on 11 September, 36 Singaporeans were registered with the Ministry. On 12 September, another 320 registered. Today (13 September), another 52 Singaporeans registered.
This suggests Singaporeans who needed the Ministry!|s assistance to locate their friends, employees or relatives have been able to do so.
Some Singapore media representatives have enquired if there were Singaporeans travelling in the four hijacked airplanes that crashed in New York City/Washington D.C./Pennsylvania. So far, the full flight manifest lists have not been made available. Our missions in New York and Washington D.C. are working to ascertain if there were in fact Singaporeans on board.
Given the catastrophic nature of the tragedy, it will take some time before the total number and identity of the casualties can be determined.
Singaporeans can continue to register their friends and relatives at the following:
