MFA Press Statement: Appointment of Singapore's Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands

The Government has appointed Professor Walter Woon, 47, as Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, resident in Brussels. Professor Woon is concurrently Singapore's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, the European Commission, the Holy See and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He will present his credentials to Her Majesty Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands on 22 October 2003.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Professor Walter Woon is presently Singapore's Ambassador to Belgium with concurrent accreditation to the European Commission, the Holy See and Luxembourg. He was Singapore's Ambassador to Germany (February 1998 to July 2003) and was concurrently accredited to Greece (March 2000 to July 2003).

Born in Singapore on 12 September 1956, Professor Woon studied at the National University of Singapore and Cambridge University. He was called to the Singapore Bar in 1985.

Professor Woon joined the National University of Singapore in 1981. In his service with the University, he held the posts of Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Law (1988 to 1991) and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law (1991 to 1995). He remains a Professor at the Law Faculty of the National University of Singapore. He is the author of several legal textbooks.

Professor Woon was the Legal Adviser to the President and Council of Presidential Advisors from 1995 to 1997. He was a Director of Intraco Ltd (1989-2000) and of Natsteel Ltd (1997-2001), both companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Singapore. He was a nominated Member of Parliament from 1992 to 1996.

Professor Woon is married to Ms Janis Goh and they have two sons.
