MFA Press Statement - Appointment of Singapore's High Commissioner to Ghana and Singapore's Ambassadors to Switzerland, Finland, Panama and Chile

The Government has appointed Mr Giam Chin Toon as Singapore's next High Commissioner to the Republic of Ghana; Mr Sydney Michael Hwang as Singapore's next Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation; Mr Lua Cheng Eng as Singapore's next Ambassador to the Republic of Finland and the Republic of Panama; and Mr Philip Ng Chee Tat as Singapore's next Ambassador to the Republic of Chile. All four Ambassadors will be resident in Singapore.

Mr Giam Chin Toon will continue as Singapore's Ambassador to the Republic of Peru concurrently, resident in Singapore. He is a Senior Partner of Advocates & Solicitors Wee Swee Teow & Co. Mr Giam is also Chairman of the Inquiry Panel of the Law Society of Singapore. He is a Legal Assessor to the Singapore Medical Council.

Mr Sydney Michael Hwang is currently practising as Senior Counsel and Arbitrator in his own practice of Michael Hwang S.C. He was a Senior Partner and Executive Committee Member at the law firm of Allen and Gledhill, Singapore, until his retirement at the end of 2002. He has a number of international appointments: Commissioner of the United Nations Compensation Commission at Geneva, Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague and Member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration at Paris. He was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2000.

Mr Lua Cheng Eng is currently Chairman of ECICS Holdings Ltd and Jurong Technologies Industrial Corporation Ltd. He is also Deputy Chairman of International Factors (Singapore) Limited. In addition, he is a Director of SembCorp Industries Ltd and Sincere Watch Ltd. Mr Lua was awarded the Public Service Star in 1999.

Mr Philip Ng Chee Tat is presently Chief Executive Officer of Far East Organization (Singapore). Mr Ng has been with the Sino Group (Hong Kong) since 1986 and is now its Director. He is also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Yeo Hiap Seng Limited, and Chairman (non-executive) of Orchard Parade Holdings and Sentosa Development Corporation.
