MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS PRESS STATEMENT
SINGAPORE SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO OUTSTANDING ASEAN STUDENTS
The Singapore Government today awarded 58 university scholarships to promising ASEAN students under the Singapore Scholarship Programme. The students are from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The annual scholarships, now in their sixth year, are awarded under the auspices of the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP).
2 In announcing the scholarships, Mr Raymond Lim, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry, said the Singapore Scholarship awards were intended to ensure that good education opportunities remained available to bright, young people in ASEAN so that they could contribute significantly to the growth of their country on their return home.
3 The successful Singapore Scholars will undertake full-time undergraduate studies at the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University. The scholarships cover tuition fees, airfare, living and accommodation allowance.
4 Launched by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong during the ASEAN Summit in Hanoi in December 1998, this scholarship scheme later came under the ambit of the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) which was announced at the ASEAN Summit in Singapore in November 2000.
5 To date, the Singapore Scholarship Programme has brought more than 290 ASEAN students to Singapore. It is a Government-to-Government scheme administered by the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
