The Singapore Government will be providing relief assistance to the countries stricken by the earthquake and tsunamis on 26 December 2004.
An SAF medical team with medical and relief supplies is on standby to fly to Indonesia within the next 48 hours. Singapore authorities are liaising with the Indonesian authorities on how best to deploy the team.
Singapore is also sending two personnel, one each from MINDEF and the SCDF, to the UN Disaster Assistance and Coordination (UNDAC) to help coordinate disaster relief and assess the damage in the affected countries.
The Singapore Government will also provide S$500,000 to the Singapore Red Cross Society to help them launch their appeal for public donations to send relief supplies to Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The total amount of the Singapore Government's contribution is expected to be approximately S$2 million.
Singapore will work closely with the Singapore Red Cross and relevant authorities in the countries affected to determine their respective needs.
