As part of his official visit to Brazil, Deputy Prime Minister, Co-ordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Law Prof S Jayakumar met the Vice-President of Brazil, Mr Jose Alencar Gomes da Silva, in Brasilia on Wednesday 21 September 2005.
The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional developments as well as how Brazil and Singapore could encourage greater two-way trade and investment, economic cooperation and greater people-to-people contact. They also exchanged views on developments in Asia and Asia-Latin American ties. Vice-President Alencar expressed appreciation for Singapore's support of Brazil's candidature for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
In Brasilia, Deputy Prime Minister Jayakumar also met with Chief of Staff of the Presidency Dilma Rousseff and senior government officials from the Ministry of External Relations. Prof Jayakumar left for Sao Paulo for the final leg of his visit to Brazil, where he will officiate at the opening of the International Enterprise Singapore office. He is accompanied by Minister of State for Trade & Industry and National Development Heng Chee How, Ambassador to Brazil Choo Chiau Beng, and government officials.
