During his official visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan (31 May to 6 June 2006), Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo had meetings with two Singapore companies that have established a presence in Kazakhstan.
In Almaty, Minister Yeo visited a Kazakh school, which is one of the 800 using the multimedia and linguaphone system known as "Merits" developed by ST Engineering's local joint venture (Kaz-ST Engineering Bastau) to promote e-learning in Kazakh schools.
Minister Yeo also visited a shipyard operated by Singapore's Keppel Offshore and Marine's local joint venture (Keppel Kazakhstan LLP) in the city of Aktau, which is on the coast of the oil and gas-rich Caspian Sea. While in Aktau, Minister Yeo met the Governor of the Mangistau region, Mr Krymbek Kusherbayev, who also hosted a dinner in honour of Minister Yeo. They welcomed the positive contributions that Keppel Kazakhstan LLP has made to the development of Aktau.
