MFA Press Statement: Appointment of Singapore’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco and Republic of Tunisia

The Government has appointed Mr Michael Cheok as Singapore's first Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Tunisia. He will be resident in Singapore.

Mr Cheok was Singapore's High Commissioner to India, with concurrent accreditation to Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives and Sri Lanka, from March 1989 to October 1992, and Singapore's Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, with concurrent accreditation to Greece and the Czech Republic, from March 1993 to July 1996. In the Ministry headquarters, Mr Cheok served as Director (International) of the Policy, Planning & Analysis Directorate IV from 1982 to 1984, Director of the Policy, Planning & Analysis Directorate III from 1987 to 1989 and Director of the ASEAN Directorate from 1996 to 1999.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Mr Michael Cheok was born in Malaysia on 21 June 1939. He obtained his Bachelor of Law (Honours) degree from the then University of Singapore in 1965.

Mr Cheok joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in May 1970. He served at the Singapore Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as First Secretary from 1974 to 1976 and as Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative from 1984 to 1987. In MFA Headquarters, he was Deputy Director (International Organisations) from 1976 to 1982, Director (International) of the Policy, Planning & Analysis Directorate IV from 1982 to 1984, and Director of the Policy, Planning & Analysis Directorate III from 1987 to 1989. He was Singapore's High Commissioner to India, with concurrent accreditation to Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives and Sri Lanka from March 1989 to October 1992. From March 1993 to July 1996, he was Singapore's Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, with concurrent accreditation to Greece and the Czech Republic. Mr Cheok was appointed as Director of the ASEAN Directorate from 1996 to 1999. He retired from the Singapore Civil Service on 1 January 2000.

He was awarded the Long Service Medal in 1995.

Mr Cheok is married to Mdm Lucia Han and they have one son.
