His Highness Sayyid Fahad Mahmood Al-Said, Deputy Prime Minister of the Sultanate of Oman, accompanied by Ministers and senior officials from Oman, toured Muscat Street today.
His Highness was accompanied by Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) Acting CEO Choy Chan Pong. He also visited the Malay Heritage Centre and was hosted by Acting Chairman and MP for Pasir Ris/Punggol GRC, Dr Ahmad Magad. His Highness is on an official visit to Singapore from 9 to 12 December 2007 at Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's invitation.
Oman and Singapore have agreed in-principle to jointly upgrade Muscat Street to commemorate the historic links between Oman and Singapore. The URA will coordinate and develop the details of the enhancement with other Singapore agencies and the Omani authorities. Possible changes to Muscat Street include the creation of a "Muscat flavour" for the street through the addition of paving, street furniture and flora akin to those in Oman, as well as partial pedestrianisation.
When completed, the Muscat Street project will add to the distinctive ethnic feel of the Kampong Glam area, and serve as a tangible, living reminder of the historic links between Singapore and Oman and the historic connections between the Southeast Asia and Middle East.
