MFA Press Statement: State Visit of Her Excellency Tarja Halonen the President of the Republic of Finland, 20 February 2008

The Finnish President Tarja Halonen is in Singapore for a State Visit on 20 February 2008 at the invitation of President S R Nathan.

During President Halonen's meeting with President S R Nathan, both sides noted that Singapore and Finland enjoyed good relations, and that the two countries shared many similarities such as in their economic outlook and emphasis on education. They also exchanged views on several issues including developments in ASEAN and Europe. President Halonen also met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during her State Visit. During their meeting, President Halonen and Mr Lee had a fruitful discussion on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between Singapore and Finland. They also exchanged views on issues of mutual concern, such as climate change, sustainable development and the challenges of an ageing population.
