UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor Prof Ibrahim Gambari is visiting Singapore from 23-26 February 2008 as part of his regional consultation tour.
Prof Gambari called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo during his visit. There were good exchanges of views on Prof Gambari's recent tour of the region and international support of his mission in Myanmar. During the meetings, Prime Minister Lee and Minister Yeo reiterated Singapore's full support for the Secretary-General's Good Offices mission and Prof Gambari's early visit to Myanmar to help in the country's work towards national reconciliation.
During Prof Gambari's meeting with Minister Yeo, Prof Gambari and Minister Yeo noted positively the announcement by the Myanmar Government on the holding of a referendum on the new Constitution in May 2008 and the General Elections in 2010. However, they felt that for national reconciliation to be achieved, the referendum and elections had to be credible and inclusive.
Prof Gambari will leave Singapore tomorrow.
