Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Thailand, His Excellency Samak Sundaravej, who is making an introductory visit to Singapore from 18-20 March 2008, called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after receiving a Ceremonial Welcome at the Istana today. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed the positive development of bilateral relations. They also exchanged views on developments in Thailand and the region, as well as the progress made by ASEAN in its drive towards integration. Prime Minister Samak and Mr Lee reaffirmed the importance for all ASEAN countries to ratify the ASEAN Charter as soon as possible.
Separately, Prime Minister Samak also paid a courtesy call on President S R Nathan. They had a fruitful exchange of views on the long-standing ties between Singapore and Thailand and ways in which both sides could continue to work closely to strengthen cooperation, both bilaterally and within ASEAN. They also discussed regional issues.
Prime Minister Samak will meet Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew later today. Prime Minister Lee will host Prime Minister Samak and his delegation to an official dinner this evening at the Istana.
