MFA Press Statement: Official Visit of the Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd, 12 August 2008

The Prime Minister of Australia the Honourable Kevin Rudd, who made an official visit to Singapore today, called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after receiving a Ceremonial Welcome at the Istana. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues. They reaffirmed the excellent bilateral ties between both countries and underscored their commitment to continue cooperation. They also exchanged views on the evolving regional dynamics and architecture.

Following the meeting, the two Prime Ministers signed the "Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Australia and the Government of the Republic of Singapore Concerning Defence Cooperation", which serves as a framework to manage existing areas of defence cooperation and promote new areas of cooperation. Prime Minister Lee also hosted lunch for Prime Minister Rudd and his delegation.

Prime Minister Rudd met separately with Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. During Senior Minister Goh's call on Prime Minister Rudd at the Istana, the two leaders had a wide-ranging discussion on international issues of mutual interest. Senior Minister Goh shared his views on recent developments in India and China. Prime Minister Rudd and Minister Mentor Lee discussed global issues and developments.
