President S R Nathan has written to Lao President HE Choummaly Sayasone to express his deep sympathies over the passing of the former President of the Lao PDR and founding member of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party HE Nouhak Phoumsavanh.

On behalf of the people of Singapore, I would like to convey our deepest condolences to the people of the Lao PDR on the passing of His Excellency Nouhak Phoumsavanh, former President of the Lao PDR. I also wish to convey our deepest condolences to the family of His Excellency Nouhak Phoumsavanh.
As a founding member of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, His Excellency Nouhak Phoumsavanh played a pivotal role in the modern history of the Lao PDR, leading the nation during a challenging period. His Excellency Nouhak Phoumsavanh had displayed great vision and courage directing Lao PDR's efforts to integrate into the region, particularly in its decision to join ASEAN. With his passing, the Lao PDR has lost a great patriot and leader.
