Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo met with his Japanese counterpart, Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone, at the sidelines of the 20th APEC Ministerial Meeting in Lima, Peru. Both Ministers reaffirmed the good relations between both countries and agreed to further strengthen cooperation, especially during the consecutive APEC Chairmanships of Singapore and Japan in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Both Ministers also agreed on the importance of following through on the decisions made during the G20 Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy in Washington D.C. to deal with the impact of the global financial crisis.
Minister Yeo also attended an Informal Foreign Ministers' breakfast meeting hosted by Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde where the Foreign Ministers of APEC exchanged views on a range of issues, including the Doha Development Agenda negotiations, the global economic situation and its impact on developing and developed economies.
