Ms Ann Veneman, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), made a one-day visit to Singapore at the invitation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr George Yeo, under the auspices of the Ministry's United Nations (UN) Distinguished Visitors Programme.
The UN Distinguished Visitors Programme invites outstanding individuals linked to the UN system to visit Singapore. UNICEF is a UN specialised agency that works for children's rights, their survival, development and protection, guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Singapore is a party to this Convention.
Ms Veneman called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong this morning. Discussions focused on UNICEF's priorities and activities in Asia. In the afternoon, Ms Veneman visited the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College East to learn more about vocational education in Singapore.
