President S R Nathan had sent a letter to congratulate the new United States President Barack Obama. The letter is reproduced below:
Your Excellency,
On behalf of the people of Singapore, I would like to extend to you, Mr President, my warmest congratulations on your inauguration as the 44th President of the United States of America.
Your inauguration comes at a time when there are many challenges facing the US and the rest of the world. Many countries that are grappling with the consequences of the global economic downturn will be looking to the US for leadership in addressing the global economic situation, as well as security and environmental challenges. Your active initiatives will, I am sure, contribute immensely towards promoting trust, greater understanding and active cooperation among the peoples of the United States and the international community.
Relations between Singapore and the US have been longstanding, close, multi-faceted and versatile. It has grown from strength to strength over the years. The US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement and the Strategic Framework Agreement are the centrepieces of our relations in recent times. With your support, I look forward to further broaden and deepen our relations under your Administration.
I am confident that under your able leadership, the United States will be able to respond effectively to the various challenges both domestically and internationally. I look forward to welcoming you to Singapore in November 2009 for the APEC Summit.
I send you our best wishes for success in all your endeavours.
Yours sincerely
S R Nathan
