MFA Press Statement: Visit of Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo to Vietnam, 24 May 2009

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo, who is currently on an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Gia Khiem, was in Danang City and Quang Nam Province in Central Vietnam over the weekend.

In Danang and Quang Nam, Minister met separately with Danang City People's Committe Chairman Tran Van Minh and Party-Secretary Nguyen Duc Hai and Chairman Le Minh An of Quang Nam Province People's Committee. The Vietnamese local leaders received Minister Yeo warmly and hosted him to separate meals. During their respective meetings, the Vietnamese local leaders briefed Minister Yeo on the preoccupations and investment potential of Danang and Quang Nam. They also sought Minister Yeo's support to encourage more Singapore companies to invest in Central Vietnam. Minister Yeo agreed that such increased business interactions would further enhance Singapore's existing excellent relations with Vietnam. He also invited the Vietnamese local leaders to do a roadshow in Singapore to promote the investment opportunities in Central Vietnam.

Minister Yeo also took the opportunity of his visit to Central Vietnam to visit UNESCO World Heritage sites, My Son Sanctuary and Hoi An Ancient Town.

Minister Yeo will return to Hanoi today where he is scheduled to meet Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung tomorrow and also to attend the Asia-Europe Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
