MFA Press Statement: Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo at the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, 25 September 2009

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo, who is in New York for the 64th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, had separate bilateral meetings with St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas and Bahraini Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa on 25 September 2009. During their meeting, Prime Minister Dr Douglas and Minister Yeo agreed to promote greater bilateral cooperation between St Kitts and Nevis and Singapore. With Minister Shaikh Khalid, Minister Yeo had a good discussion on developments in the Middle East.

In addition, Minister Yeo attended Ministerial Meetings of ASEAN with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and with MERCOSUR on 25 September 2009. These annual meetings between the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN with those of the other regional organisations at the side of the UN General Assembly provide an opportunity for the Foreign Ministers to update one another on regional and global developments, as well as to exchange views on issues of common interest. Both meetings saw useful discussions, including those on the areas in which ASEAN could deepen cooperation with the GCC and with MERCOSUR. Singapore will host the Second Full-Fledged Ministerial Meeting of ASEAN and the GCC in June 2010.

Minister Yeo also hosted an informal breakfast meeting on 25 September 2009 for representatives from several countries to discuss how non-G20 countries could add value to the G20 process. That evening, Minister Yeo hosted a reception for overseas Singaporeans in New York.
