MFA Press Statement: Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo at the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, 26 September 2009

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo, who is in New York for the 64th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, attended the Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting as well as the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and President of the General Assembly Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki on 26 September 2009. Minister Yeo also met separately with his counterparts from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), India and Jordan.

With UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Minister Yeo had a wide-ranging discussion that covered bilateral relations, the current climate change negotiations and developments in the Middle East.

Besides reviewing bilateral relations between Singapore and India as well as the progress on the Nalanda University project, Minister Yeo and Indian Minister of External Affairs S M Krishna discussed global developments, including issues of global governance. Both Ministers noted that Singapore and India shared a common interest on many regional and multilateral issues. Minister Krishna also thanked Minister Yeo for Singapore's support for India's candidature for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the 2011-2012 term.

Minister Yeo and Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh had a good discussion on how bilateral relations could be strengthened. The two ministers also exchanged views on the Middle East Peace Process.
