MFA Press Statement: Telephone call between Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono

Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong made a telephone call to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono this evening. President Yudhoyono briefed PM Lee on Indonesia's response to the devastating earthquake that struck West Sumatra on Wednesday evening and the ground situation in the disaster area.

PM Lee conveyed his sympathies for the victims of the earthquake, and noted that Singapore had despatched a 42-man rescue contingent along with US$50,000 of emergency supplies to support Indonesia's rescue and recovery efforts earlier in the evening. He told the President that Singapore stood ready to render further help to Indonesia, for example by sending a medical team. He also thanked the President for the efforts of the Indonesian rescue workers, who rescued Singaporean John Lee alive from the rubble of a hotel.

President Yudhoyono thanked PM Lee for Singapore's offer of assistance and support.
