MFA Press Statement: State Visit of President Nguyen Minh Triet of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, 17 Nov 09

Speaker of Parliament Mr Abdullah Tarmugi called on His Excellency President Nguyen Minh Triet today. During their meeting, both sides affirmed the warm relations and close cooperation between the Vietnam National Assembly and the Parliament of Singapore, both bilaterally and within regional parliamentary forums.

President Triet also delivered the Singapore Business Federation Eminent Leaders Lecture "Vietnam: Partnership for Progress" to an audience of some 400 distinguished guests which included Speaker Tarmugi, Minister of State for Trade & Industry Lee Yi Shyan, Members of Parliament, as well as representatives from the business community, diplomatic corps and academia. The Lecture was chaired by Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Prof S Jayakumar, who also called on President Triet and hosted lunch for President Triet to meet with a select group of Singapore business leaders with key investment interests in Vietnam.

President Triet also visited Fusionopolis and Singapore Botanic Gardens where an orchid Spathoglottis Phong Chi was named in his honour and that of his wife Mdm Tran Thi Kim Chi. In addition, he visited the Ho Chi Minh Memorial Stele at the Asian Civilisations Museum, before wrapping up his two-day State Visit and returning to Vietnam this evening.
