MFA Press Statement: Visit of Minister For Foreign Affairs George Yeo to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo, who is in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago for the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting preceding the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), briefed the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers on 26 November 2009 on the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010 and encouraged all Commonwealth countries to participate in the various sports, cultural and educational programmes of the Youth Olympic Games.

Minister Yeo also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Industry, Trade, Commerce, Investment and Consumer Affairs H.E. Rufus Bousquet of St Lucia, Minister for Foreign Affairs Moses Wetangula of Kenya and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Ojo Maduekwe of Nigeria.

Minister Yeo and Minister Bousquet discussed developments in the Caribbean and Asia. Minister Yeo extended an invitation to Minister Bousquet to visit Singapore next year along with other Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.

Minister Yeo was briefed by Minister Wetangula on developments in Africa. Minister Wetangula invited Singapore companies to explore business and investment opportunities in Kenya. They also discussed the visit of Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga to Singapore in early 2010.

Minister Yeo and Minister Maduekwe agreed to build upon the good bilateral relations between Singapore and Nigeria by increasing cooperation on capacity building in Nigeria. Minister Yeo also invited Minister Maduekwe to visit Singapore.
