MFA Press Statement: Visit of Minister For Foreign Affairs George Yeo to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo, who is in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), had separate meetings with Trinidad and Tobago Minister of Foreign Affairs Paula Gopee-Scoon, Zambia Minister of Foreign Affairs Kabinga Pande, and British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs David Miliband on 28 November 2009.

Minister Yeo thanked Minister Gopee-Scoon for the warm hospitality that was extended to the Singapore delegation to CHOGM. Minister Gopee-Scoon briefed Minister Yeo on Trinidad and Tobago's efforts to further develop its economy. Minister Yeo and Minister Gopee-Scoon also expressed their mutual desire to strengthen the bilateral cooperation between Singapore and Trinidad and Tobago.

During their meeting, Minister Pande updated Minister Yeo on the outlook for the Zambian economy. The two Ministers also discussed bilateral relations between Singapore and Zambia as well as developments in Africa.

Minister Yeo and Secretary of State Miliband had an exchange of views on global developments, issues on the CHOGM agenda such as climate change, and developments in Southeast Asia. Minister Yeo encouraged the UK to play a leadership role to promote greater engagement of ASEAN by the European Union.
