Your Majesty

On behalf of the people of the Republic of Singapore, I would like to extend my condolences on the passing of His Majesty Sultan Iskandar ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail, Sultan and Sovereign Ruler of the State and Territories of Johor Darul Ta'zim.

His Majesty's warm and longstanding personal ties with Singapore leaders and the people of Singapore are well known. It helped to promote stability, security and growth for both Johor and Singapore. We warmly remember His Majesty's historic State Visit in 1988 as the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong and were honoured to officially host His Majesty again in 2007. As Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he was wise and well-loved by his subjects. The love and respect that he commanded was evident in the throngs that showed up at Istana Bukit Serene during the annual Hari Raya celebrations.

His Majesty's patronage of many voluntary organisations in the country and his devotion to the people have earned him a place in Johor's and Malaysia's history. His encouragement, contributions and passion for his people and his country will always be remembered.

My wife joins me in sending you our deepest condolences and hope you will have all the strength needed to bear this loss."

Your Majesty,

On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I wish to extend my deepest condolences on the passing of His Majesty Sultan Iskandar ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail, Sultan and Sovereign Ruler of the State and Territories of Johor Darul Ta'zim.

During his reign, His Majesty played a key role in the development and prosperity of Johor, for the benefit of his people. His Majesty's lifelong devotion to Johoreans was repaid by their affection and respect. As the 8th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, His Majesty was the sovereign of all the people of Malaysia and discharged his royal duties in the same spirit.

His Majesty also played a pivotal role in fostering good relations between Singapore and Malaysia. My wife and I personally remember well the many times we have received his warm and generous hospitality in the Istana Bukit Serene. On Singapore's part, we were honoured to host the first state visit by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1988. We had another occasion to renew ties during His Majesty's visit to Singapore in April 2007, to receive an honorary degree from the National University of Singapore in recognition of his contributions to bilateral ties. He was by then more frail, but at dinner was in good spirits and happy to be among friends.

His Majesty's generous friendship and lasting contributions to our bilateral relations will long be remembered.

You are in our thoughts at this sorrowful time.

Yours sincerely
Lee Hsien Loong
