MFA Press Statement: Call on Singapore Leaders by Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr Tarek Kamel and Minister of Investment Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin

Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr Tarek Kamel and Minister of Investment Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin jointly called on President S R Nathan, followed by a call on Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, at the Istana this afternoon.

President and the two Egyptian Ministers exchanged views on bilateral relations. President noted the warm and longstanding ties between Singapore and Egypt, and encouraged them to broaden and enhance bilateral cooperation in new areas. President also hoped that trade and economic ties could be further enhanced. The two Ministers briefed President on recent developments in Egypt and the Middle East region.

During the call on Senior Minister Goh, the Ministers expressed Egypt's intention to strengthen economic cooperation with Singapore. In this regard they noted the progress in the negotiation of the Singapore-Egypt Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). The Ministers also briefed Senior Minister Goh on the steps being taken by the Egyptian Government to grow Egypt's economy. Senior Minister Goh expressed the hope that Singapore and Egypt could learn from each other's development experiences.

Dr Kamel and Dr Mohieldin are in Singapore to attend the "Egypt Day Conference", an investment seminar organised by an Egyptian investment bank CI Capital, and co-hosted by DBS and the Singapore Business Federation.
