MFA Press Statement: Report on the sinking of the Cheonan

We have noted with deep concern the report of the investigation by the Republic of Korea (ROK) and other international experts which had concluded that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was responsible for the sinking of the Cheonan.

We appreciate the ROK for having conducted a thorough investigation before reaching any conclusion.

This incident has very serious implications for the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula. It could further complicate an already complex situation and, if mishandled, may destabilise the entire region.

We commend the responsibility and restraint with which the ROK has reacted.

Singapore hopes that the DPRK and other parties will show similar restraint and cooperate fully with the international community to preserve peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and ensure that such tragic and dangerous incidents are never repeated.

We once again offer our sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives when the Cheonan sank.
