MFA Spokesman's comments in response to media queries about the ongoing clashes in Bangkok and reports of a possible curfew

19 May 2010

In response to media queries about the ongoing clashes in Bangkok, and reports of a possible curfew, the MFA Spokesman said:

"We regret that the situation has come to such a pass and we are saddened that more lives were lost in today's clashes. We urge all parties to exercise restraint and to make their best efforts to reach a political compromise soon, otherwise there will be more violence and more lives lost, and the consequences for Thailand and the region will be grave.

Given the developments today and the possible imposition of a curfew in Bangkok, the Ministry strongly recommends that Singaporeans defer travel to Bangkok. For their safety, Singaporeans already in Bangkok are advised to remain indoors as far as possible and avoid unnecessary travel within the city, in particular to areas where there are clashes between the authorities and protestors. They should be on personal alert and monitor the news closely. They should also take the necessary precautions for their personal safety and eRegister immediately at here if they have not already done so. This will enable the Ministry and our Embassy in Bangkok to contact them and render the necessary consular assistance in case of emergency.

MFA and our Embassy in Bangkok continue to closely monitor the situation.

Should Singaporeans require assistance, they can contact the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok or the MFA Duty Officer (24-hours) at:
