MFA Press Statement: Visit of Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo to India, 1 to 5 August 2010

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo called on Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Prime Minister's Official Residence yesterday. Minister Yeo and PM Singh discussed the excellent state of bilateral relations and cooperation. Minister Yeo conveyed PM Lee Hsien Loong's good wishes and reiterated PM Lee's invitation to PM Singh to visit Singapore. PM Singh responded positively and welcomed the launch of the second review of CECA, expressing confidence that it would further strengthen relations. He encouraged more Singapore companies to explore investment opportunities in infrastructural development.

On India-ASEAN relations, PM Singh agreed with Minister George Yeo that India-ASEAN relations continue to make good progress with the completion of the goods chapter of the ASEAN-India FTA and looked forward to an early conclusion of the services and investment chapters. Minister Yeo briefed PM Singh on the discussions at the recently concluded 43rd AMM in Hanoi, especially on the expansion of the East Asia Summit to include the United States and Russia. PM Singh said that India welcomed the inclusion of the two countries and reaffirmed the centrality of ASEAN in the evolving regional architecture.

On Sunday, Minister Yeo called on BJP leader L K Advani and former Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh.

Minister Yeo is also in New Delhi to attend the 6th Meeting of the Nalanda Mentor Group, chaired by Professor Amartya Sen.
