MFA Press Statement: Condolence Messages to Indonesia

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo conveyed his condolences to Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa on the tragic loss of lives and destruction wrought in the wake of the Mentawai Islands tsunami and eruption of Mount Merapi. Minister Yeo and Minister Marty are in Hanoi, Vietnam to attend the 7th Meeting of the ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) ahead of the 17th ASEAN Summit, which begins tomorrow. Minister Yeo also informed Minister Marty that Singapore stood ready to render our assistance to Indonesia's relief efforts.

President S R Nathan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong have also written condolence messages to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The text of the letters is enclosed.

It was with much sadness that I heard, while here in Finland, about the tsunami that struck West Sumatra and the eruption of Mount Merapi, causing devastation and loss of life. On behalf of the people of Singapore, I would like to express through you my deepest sympathies to the people affected by these disasters. I hope they will bravely endure the pain and suffering that this calamity has imposed on them.

Our thoughts are with the Indonesian people during these trying times, especially the families of the victims and their dependents. Singapore stands ready to assist Indonesia in whatever way we can.

Letter from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

Dear President Yudhoyono,

I was deeply saddened to learn of the destruction caused by the tsunami that struck the Mentawai Islands following the earthquake on Monday night, and the eruption of Mount Merapi on Tuesday. On behalf of the government and people of Singapore, I would like to convey my heartfelt condolences to those who were affected by the disasters, especially the families of those who have lost loved ones.

Your government has taken swift relief and rescue efforts, and attended to the needs of those who have been evacuated. Singapore stands ready to support and assist Indonesia in whatever way we can. I am confident that under your able and steadfast leadership, Indonesia will recover from these unfortunate disasters with resilience.
