MFA Press Statement: Minister For Foreign Affairs George Yeo's Phone Call To Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa On The Haze Situation

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo called Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa this morning at 9am to express Singapore's concern about the worsening haze situation and to reiterate Singapore's immediate readiness to help Indonesia put out some of the fires in Sumatra. His phone call came after Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim's phone call to his Indonesian counterpart Gusti Hatta last night. Minister Yeo informed Minister Marty that the PSI went over 100 yesterday and cases of respiratory problems including asthma had increased significantly.

Minister Marty thanked Minister Yeo for calling him. He assured Minister Yeo that Indonesia would address the haze problem, adding that many Indonesians in Sumatra are also affected. Minister Yeo and Minister Marty agreed that bilateral cooperation had helped reduce the haze problem in the last three years and can ameliorate the current situation despite the dry weather.
