Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong met Chilean President Sebastián Piñera at the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Yokohama, Japan. This was Prime Minister Lee's first meeting with President Piñera. Prime Minister Lee congratulated President Piñera for leading the successful rescue of the 33 trapped miners in the San José mine last month. Both leaders reaffirmed the warm ties between Singapore and Chile, and discussed ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation, and inter-regional cooperation between Latin America and Asia. Prime Minister Lee extended an invitation to President Piñera to visit Singapore.
Prime Minister Lee also had separate meetings with Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang and Peruvian President Alan Garcia. .
