MFA Spokesman's comments in response to media queries on the decision of the Romanian court to release Dr Silviu Ionescu under judicial supervision

In response to media queries on the decision of the Romanian court to release Dr Silviu Ionescu under judicial supervision, the MFA Spokesman said:

"We have to respect the Court's decision. Just as we expect countries to respect Singapore's judicial process, we similarly respect Romania's.

We understand that in releasing Dr Ionescu under judicial supervision, the Court had imposed a number of conditions. These include prohibiting Dr Ionescu from leaving the city of Bucharest and requiring him to report to the Court when summoned, to ensure that Dr Ionescu does not abscond. Dr Ionescu is also prohibited from changing his home address without prior permission from the Court.

Dr Ionescu's release under judicial supervision does not mean that he will not stand trial. The next court hearing is scheduled for 12 January 2011. We will continue to monitor the situation closely. Singapore has been repeatedly assured by the Romanian authorities of their commitment to ensure that justice is served, most recently in September 2010 when Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Baconschi met Minister George Yeo."
