24 November 2010

In response to media queries on the exchange of artillery fire between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Yeonpyeong island, the MFA Spokesman said:

"We are gravely concerned about this development. The exchange of artillery fire was undoubtedly initiated by the DPRK. This was a reckless and provocative action that dangerously heightened tensions in what was an already highly fraught and uncertain situation. It deserves our strongest condemnation. We hope that there will be no further escalation that could result in the destabilization of the Korean Peninsula and the wider region. We urge both parties to exercise utmost restraint. Peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula is of critical importance to all of East Asia."
