MFA Press Statement: Appointment of Singapore's Ambassador to France

The Government has appointed Mr Tan York Chor as Singapore's next Ambassador to France. He will assume post on 3 January 2011.

Mr Tan joined the Singapore Civil Service in 1985 and had worked in various capacities in the Ministry of Defence and in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as First Secretary in the Singapore Embassy in Paris (1991 - 1993), Counsellor in the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok (1993 - 1994), Counsellor in the Singapore High Commission in Canberra (1997 - 1999), and Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative in the Singapore Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York (2002 - 2005). At the Ministry headquarters, he was Director/Europe (March 2006 - May 2007) and concurrently Director/International Economics (March - October 2006) and Director/International Organisations (April - November 2007). Mr Tan was Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva from November 2007 to November 2010.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Mr Tan York Chor was the Permanent Representative of Singapore to the United Nations in Geneva (November 2007 to November 2010) and was concurrently accredited as the Permanent Representative of Singapore to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.

Born on 27 July 1958, Mr Tan graduated with a Diplome D'Ingenieur from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie of Strasbourg, France in 1983.

Mr Tan joined the Singapore Civil Service in 1985 and had worked in various capacities in the Ministry of Defence and in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as First Secretary in the Singapore Embassy in Paris (1991 - 1993), as Counsellor in Bangkok (1993 - 1994) and Canberra (1997 - 1999), and Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative in the Singapore Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and concurrently Deputy High Commissioner in the Singapore High Commission to Canada (2002 - 2005). He was Deputy Director/Europe (1995 - 1997), Deputy Director/Other Southeast Asia (2000 - 2002), Senior Deputy Director/Policy, Planning and Analysis Directorate II covering North America and Europe (2002), Director/Europe (March 2006 - May 2007) and concurrently Director/International Economics (March - October 2006) and Director/International Organisations (April - November 2007).

Mr Tan was awarded the Long Service Medal in 2008.

Mr Tan is married to Mdm Lim Boon Siang and they have three daughters.
