MFA Spokesman's comments on the earthquake in New Zealand

The New Zealand authorities have declared a state of emergency in Christchurch. Aftershocks are common after a major earthquake and Singaporeans travelling to Christchurch may experience inconveniences due to the widespread damage to the city's infrastructure. If travel to Christchurch is unavoidable, please be on high alert and monitor the news closely. Prior to travel, it is advisable for Singaporeans to eRegister with MFA at http://eregister.mfa.gov.sg/ and check with their insurance agents if their insurance policies covers their trip to Christchurch.

Singaporeans already in Christchurch should continue to keep in close touch with the Singapore High Commission in Wellington, which will be despatching an officer to Christchurch on 24 February 2011 to monitor the situation and provide assistance where required. Singaporeans should also continue to take all necessary precautions for their personal safety, including monitoring media reports and observing instructions by the local authorities.
