MFA Press Statement: Call On Minister For Foreign Affairs George Yeo By Japanese Ambassador To Singapore H.E. Yoichi Suzuki On 15 March 2011

Japanese Ambassador to Singapore H.E. Yoichi Suzuki called on Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo to express his appreciation for Singapore's support in the relief operations following the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on 11 March 2011. Minister Yeo conveyed his deepest sympathies to Ambassador Suzuki and the full solidarity of the people and Government of Singapore in this time of crisis. Minister Yeo asked Ambassador Suzuki how Singapore could play a helpful role, being mindful that the transportation infrastructure in the affected areas had been badly damaged. Ambassador Suzuki said that blankets, mattresses, bottled water and water containers were in short supply. Minister Yeo affirmed the close friendship between our two peoples and pledged to do all we could.

Minister Yeo has appointed Singapore's former Ambassador to Japan, Ambassador Chew Tai Soo, as coordinator for our national efforts to support the Japanese people. Donations can be given through the Singapore Red Cross which has good links with the Japanese Red Cross.
