MFA Press Statement: Public Briefing and Exhibition on the Muscat Street Project, 5-6 March 2011

Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed and MP for Jalan Besar GRC Ms Denise Phua will be the Guests of Honour for the Public Briefing on the Muscat Street Project at the Sultan Mosque Auditorium from 1100 to 1230 hrs on 5 March 2011. A two-day exhibition will also be held at the lobby of Sultan Mosque from 5 to 6 March. The public is invited to attend both the briefing and exhibition.

The Muscat Street Project will be an iconic project that highlights Singapore's historical links with Oman and the region. It aims to enhance the facilities and façade of the street and infuse a unique Omani flavour into Muscat Street. The upgraded Muscat Street will be an attraction for locals and tourists alike, and will add to the distinctive ethnic character of the Kampong Glam Conservation area.

When the project is completed, Muscat Street will boast Omani-style archways at both ends of the street, distinguishing it from the adjacent Kandahar Street and Arab Street. The pedestrian mall and roads will be revamped with new sidewalks, road pavings, and tilings. Omani murals and mosaic artwork will line the new sidewalks leading to Arab Street. The entrance to Sultan Mosque will also be enhanced with a pedestrian plaza.
