MFA Press Statement: Visit of Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli to Vienna, Austria for the International Atomic Energy Agency Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety, 20-21 June 2011

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs, Masagos Zulkifli will be in Vienna, Austria from 20-21 June 2011 to attend the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety. Minister of State Masagos will be accompanied by officials from MFA, MEWR, MTI, MHA, NEA and SCDF.

The ministerial conference, which is initiated and organised by the IAEA, aims to draw lessons learnt from the Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan to strengthen nuclear safety globally. Apart from making a preliminary assessment of the Fukushima incident, the Conference will assess national, regional and international nuclear emergency preparedness and response capabilities; discuss nuclear safety implications and identify areas of the global nuclear safety framework which should be reviewed.

The IAEA was set up in 1957 as the world's "Atoms for Peace" organisation under the United Nations. The agency works with its Member States and partners to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies. Singapore has been a member of the IAEA since 1967. Singapore is currently a member of the IAEA's Board of Governors.
